It’s very nice that this cemetery will be preserved and I would hope that the state and county will clean and maintain it to further the dignity of these souls. ️️️

This is an awesome discovery. Most slave graves are only marked with a fieldstone at best. Amazing to have graves with headstones and actual names.

The Johnston County Heritage Center would like to set the record straight on this cemetery. This is not a slave cemetery. The remains of an African American woman who lived on the property in the early 20th century are buried here. The remaining stones are for members of the Watson family (white). There is without question a cemetery nearby containing graves of African Americans who were enslaved by the Watson family, but the exact location of that cemetery is unknown to us.
