This is something I am struggling with at the moment. Someone gave me the title of being a Godmother...I was never asked to be the Godparent, but they just assumed that I wanted to be. I thanked them for the honor, but I am currently having mixed feelings about it because I really don't want to be a Godparent. From my understanding, the duties will be whatever the agreement is between the parents of the child and the Godparent. People who are taking on this role need to discuss with the parents exactly what their expectation of them should be. Because some parents will take advantage of the situation by expecting the Godparent to be there at their beck and call. Quite often, parents will make a Godparent feel obligated and guilt shamed into doing things they really don't want to do. This is where I am. I do not want to feel obligated to buy a gift for every occasion, or babysit when I don't feel like it or, help buy the child his first car or help contribute to his collecte education when I can't afford it. These are some of the things Godparents may be expected to do and it's not fair. I'd rather give from the heart...not be pressured to.

A god parent is where they step in when the parents can’t take care of the children!

I believe a God parent should be better than a natural parent... point being its spiritual and they should cover you in the word! They should be praying for you as often as they pray for themselves. God parents should be able to be a parent to you should something happen to your natural parents. So in your case you need to pray for your God Parents so they won't stay on the path of destruction.
