I live in the Santa Cruz mountains in California and even though I've only been riding for like a week now, it's so much more fun than driving a car. I've got a 1999 Ninja 250 (same color as yours), and so far so good. Commuting to school and going on nice, twisty, scenic rides with a friend. Even though I still blow at riding, I can tell I'm getting better pretty much every day.

Great advice on keeping the upgrades to a minimum for your first foray into motorcycles. My first bike was an RGV 250. I've had it for less than 6 months and it's already up for sale. The excitement of two wheels got the best of me and within the first month I had sunk around $300 into "little" upgrades. I now wish I had that money to invest into my upgrade!

dirt bikes are good starter bikes then when you are ready for the streets you already have a feel for what not to do and what to do when things get out of hand

The SV and FZ are two of the most overlooked bikes out there and both are excellent that you would be hard pressed to grow out of. Totally agree with you.

Taking the MSF course (they have one at Cabrillo College) helped a ton, even though it's mostly slow-speed riding. I honestly feel safer in the 45 MPH zone of Highway 9 than I did in the steep, narrow streets of my neighborhood. At some point, you really just have to spread your wings and fly (confidence is key). Speed=stability.

My 6'2" 285lb friend has been on my 250 and didn't complain. He did make the bike look tiny though. I've also seen a 300+lb guy on a moped, which was awesome. It was completely bottomed out.

I started with an 2009 R6, still have it.. love it, you dont need to start small, you just need to respect the bike.

The best way to find out is to go to a shop/dealer and sit on it. Feel it out, flick it left and right with your pelvic muscle, and get into the riding position while it's on the kickstand. Then go take the msf course, they always have a mix between cbr250s, zx250s(ninja250), and honda rebels(250 cruiser). I'm 5'6 and 220 and I have a 50cc scooter that I love ripping around in as well as a 1100cc cruiser. And hopefully a little 250 ninja in the next day or two

For your friend I would recommend something like a Shadow 750. My dad had one for a season and besides being underpowered(in my acceleration junkie opinion) I thought it was a great bike. It had a very smooth torque curve that was very easy to control. I also found it to be stable under low speeds, always a good thing for a new rider. I was 280 lbs at the time I rode it and I do think this cc range would suit him well.

good point.. you only know what kind of bikes you want by giving all types a chance... I was pleasantly surprised when I rode the Connie 14!
