I understand Russia's worry of NATO being so close. We can't act like Napoleon and Hitler never happened. BUT you can't make sovereign nations your frontline. The Baltics for example have a good reason to ally NATO, USSR times were shit and they don't want it anymore. Also NATO doesn't occupy nations, the nations want to join it.

this is a largely accurate and comprehensive explanation of the situation, although it should be mentioned that during that time that "Ukraine and Russia were part of the same country" the Ukrainians were largely abused, Both Tsarist and especially Soviet governments essentially tried to wipe out their culture and language because "otherness" was problematic in a territory so important to its industry ,their history is largely a history of abuse and imperialism.

I feel like some of the fastest and most cost effective methods to integrate ukraines economy with the rest of europes, would be to invest in expansion in the port of odessa, and investment in the dnieper as a transport corridor that links to the black sea and the danube corridor. Inland ports on the river and that sort of thing.

What Russia is doing absolutely backfired. They wanted NATO to back off but NATO is actually strengthening it's presence in the East and there is a real potential of Finland and Sweden joining soon because they see Russia as a threat more with each passing day. NATO countries are also starting to invest more in their armed forces when most of them were in pitiful state just recently.

Russia should've treaty their neighboring countries better, maybe then they wouldn't have voluntarily joined NATO.
