FYI, you can get round 12-27" buffing/burnishg pads (that goes on a hand held and floor model buffing machines) in a 10pk for $13 (shop around). It would slide right over that pipe and give you copmlete coverage.

I just build a filter based on your design with slight variations and installed it on a 14βx36β pool. That my son has a couple large bass and a large sunfish in. We use the original pool filter /pump without the cartridge filter as the pump. Within 2 or 3 days the murky water was crystal clear leaving only some sediment on the pool floor. Works great! Thanks for the info.

Gave this s shot today since I have 4 small l ponds now. Simple to build and spent 21.45 in parts. Will update in a few days on how it turned out. Thanks for the project

There are some really mean people out there. So many negative comments. This is a good diy build. Like the man says, "if you don't like it , build your own".

WOW! There's a blast from the past! That big metal 68"x38" Camel Joe advertising sign is worth around $800 bucks now... 23:58 sorry, what'd you say? I'm in the process of redesigning a pump/filter debris skimmer for my Dad's 1800 gallon Koi pond so thanks for the ideas. I think I'm going to build a massive version of something like this but "upside-down", with the feed pipe swirl "T" up top, layers of fine filter media on top, then rocks at the bottom around the pump and also a valve at the bottom too so you can open it and let any super fine sediment flush out every so often into a hidden French drain. All that is just to keep the pump clear and working, which feeds up to two big bio-filter drums. With the feed coming from the top I think it should be easier to clean out larger debris or possibly even be "maintenance free"? (The pond is under a bunch of Fir trees, so lots of stupid NEEDLES to deal with...)

Its a very good idea to use these easily available cheap materials as the filter media & also acts as a Bio filter. I will build one to see the result.

2 45s each side work best for swirl. If you use 90s it slows the water down. 2 45s each side you get a real powerful swirl.

I think bioballs or lava rocks would cut down on the maintenance, removing all those sponges when they start to clogged is gonna make a lot of people not due the required cleaning. Love the swirl feature, I do that on my saltwater mixing station.

I like the basic concept, especially the swirl feature to prevent channeling. I would use lava rock and or bio balls on the bottom, then course filter padding, topped off with polyfill stuffing. That way it doesn't clog too rapidly and reduce waterflow. Also makes cleaning a lot easier. With the intake coming through the lid, and the discharge on the side near the top, I would not add that other pipe at the bottom. It is not necessary, and only adds another place for leaks.

Great tips. I'm going to have to alter mine for a larger scale.

I want to do a very similar build for my stock tank pond, but Iβd like to use a planter pot they sell at Home Depot thatβs more heavy duty.
