It just changes your TCP Parameters, like Time to Live, Window Size, ETC. In theory if you set the values correctly for your connection type, it could speed up your internet connection, but the increase in speed won't be mindblowing.

actually that is correct because 1mb/s (small mb means megaBITS and not BYTES) is equal to 128 kiloBYTES (and not bits with the small kb).
