A couple thoughts your terrific essay provoked:

I watched Scream for the first time a couple months ago or so, and I thought it was funny how they used this very trope to show how the main male character was being overly pushy and invasive. Really is funny how little you have to change about a scene to completely alter its tone.

I never even realized it was almost always men doing it to women, even though I had never seen a female example.

never have I ever thought it was deeper than sneaking in without the parents knowing. But I have noticed it's often associated with pushy, boundary-disrespecting scenes where the guy wants to smash and the girl either playfully fake-resists and winds up making out, or (rarely) the girl firmly resists and the guy either hangs around for a while or leaves moody and butthurt (framed sympathetically). Always had a distaste for the incongruous feelings it evokes, except in situations where the threat is more explicit (see; Heathers, Megamind)

I feel like it would be a good trope for a horror movie to fully satirize and bring it's inherent creepiness to the forefront. Maybe a stalker movie or a monster movie, idk

I should mention that "Fensterln" when done properly, always includes the man first standing below the Window of the Womans bedchamber and giving out a signal, depending on where this was praticed this could have been a whistle, the throwing of a stone or even poems and rhymes, if she then chooses to open the window, then he may come in

Really excellent breakdown of the troubling messages that this trope sends! I hadn't realized just how prevalent this trope is until seeing these clips from dozens upon dozens of examples. Media makes us internalize so many toxic and unhealthy behaviors as normal.
