The partiality really shows in a lot of the comments. Many people have never owned both of these dogs. I've had Shepherds, pitbulls, Rottweilers, etc. Each dog has specific traits that I enjoy. I am absolutely against dog fighting, but a German Shepherd could easily beat the average pitbull because the Shepherd will be several inches taller and weigh up to 75lbs MORE than the pitbull. A Rottweiler is even heavier. Now a well trained fighting pitbull, one with experience in a pit fighting other dogs, could possibly win against these other breeds. Most people do not have this type of a pitbull and honestly they should be thankful they do not. Pitbulls are great dogs with a fun attitude. They love to be goofy with the family and get attention. Originally they were bred to be good with people but ferocious with other dogs. Rottweilers are like a gentle giant, smart but with an independent side and self assured. Shepherds are extremely loyal, always preferring to be by your side. They are athletic and love to have something to do all the time. I'll soon be getting a personal protection dog and I'm trying to choose between a shepherd and a rottweiler. I had a pitbull before and he didn't make the best guard dog because he was smaller and too friendly to people. He hated other animals but loved all people. I need a guard dog that loves other animals but accepts only the family and will fight to the death to keep intruders out. If someone is considering a pitbull as a family dog, one great thing about them is they hardly shed at all compared to other breeds so this makes them a little more fitting for inside the house.
