"...or am I being obtuse?"
turc1656 (9 minutes ago)
This scene is brilliant. The dialogue is so well written. Each line from Norton gets progressively more evil and Bob Gunton's delivery is impeccable.

The fact that the warden sarcastically lies about Tommys death knowing Andy knew what really happened makes it that much more evil, so much irony in this film which makes it so great

I love how he uses the phrase “cast you down”
davidlea9634 (32 minutes ago)
This scene shows how evil Norton is. One could imagine a better man agreeing to help Andy get a retrial and regain freedom, and perhaps after they can work as equals running the same scams and laundering money as before. Andy said himself he would be just as indictable for the crimes. Instead what Norton does shows he has no interest in treating Andy as a human being, let alone a partner in crime. He basically wants a slave to run his scams and polish his boots.

great touch to have the Warden reference the 'obtuse' line a month after putting Andy in solitary, showing how bitter and petty he is

"Bunton should've won the Oscar for 'Most Obtuse Actor'"
lastraes8312 (2 hour ago)
to me this guy is probably one of the best movie villains ever

Norton is still one of the most vile and despicable movie characters in history

Bob Gunton and Clancy Brown are a perfect one-two punch combination in this. Gunton's Warden Norton is the epitome of soft-spoken evil, while Brown's Captain Hadley is the sadistic muscle. Casting is definitely a HUGE part in whether or not a movie will be successful, and every part in 'The Shawshank Redemption' is perfectly cast.

Bob Gunton's performance here is perfect. The subtle but focused eyes, the gentle but confident gestures and demeanor. It all speaks to a man who knows he has absolute power in this situation and doesn't need to raise his voice at all to get his point across. He can do whatever he wants with Andy with complete immunity. Brilliant acting and a chilling moment in the film.

One of the greatest villains in cinematic history. What makes him so scary is that you can easily imagine plenty of men like him out there in real life.

"He looks like he could piss ice water" was the description of Warden Norton in the script. And how true that was.
davidbrunner6636 (20 hours ago)
In this scene, Norton gifted Andy the best gift someone in Andy's position could receive; desperation. When Andy learnt the true nature of the Warden and how far he was going to go, to prevent Andy ever from leaving Shawshank. Andy at that moment knew he was a Deadman. If he stays working under the thumb of the Warden, he'd die in Shawshank (never being allowed to leave, while he was alive) or once The Warden no longer needed Andy, he'd kill him just to tie up the loose end (just as he killed the kid to silence him). I think that's when Andy found his motivation to make his daring escape, and that he had no intention of being recaptured or taken alive. To get busy living or get busy dying.

fucked by a train is still the best threat ive heard in a movie in a while
neneshubby (13 hours ago)
Only made Andy's revenge that much sweeter.
Joetheshow445 (19 hours ago)
“You’ll think you’ve been fucked by a train” brilliant line capturing the vile wickedness of the warden
ryankeefe1236 (9 hours ago)
If shawshank is hell Norton is the devil himself

That sick smirk on Hadley's face when he shuts the door though
