Apparently this was originally intended to be darker and skighter grittier, and made with a smaller budget before DreamWorks saw it's potential and made the film made for a wider audience, soften the style and added a romantic angle for the story.

They actually do have a human shrug because the original idea of this test was for some scenes to use a human in that costume and for others to use animation
