If it's soft wood you always need to drill it with a bit smaller than the screw. Then run the screws in. That will keep it from cracking and splintering.

As a hobby wood worker, in addition to an extremely new and inexperienced miniature painter, I can tell you that I have a shop with thousands of dollars worth of power tools, fasteners and equipment. But at least you have at least one thing that I don't, and that is a perfectly functional and great looking paint rack for your paints! Great job.

Split wood. Drill pilot hole before screws

Looks great, being that chunky it should last a very long time. If you do another project like this my tip would be by drilling a small pilot hole where you are going to put a screw will stop the wood from splitting.

I've read through the comments and am amazed that not one person suggested pre-drilling holes. Glad I'm able to be the very first to suggest this.

I always pre-drill my holes slightly smaller than the size of the screw so it is less likely to split and still gives the screw plenty to grab.

Finally saw this in my feed. If you haven't already, I strongly suggest covering the tops of the caps on your paint bottles with the paint itself so that you have an accurate, dried color reference facing you.

Great vid thanks. Love the idea of using foam core for the backing. Much cheaper than thin plywood. Only thing I would have done differently is to drill small pilot holes for the screws first. Stops it splitting.

This was such a laugh! It's a refreshing thing to see a Youtuber actually show struggle and make mistakes. No fancy workshops and shopping lists of expensive tools and supplies. It's so accurate to 90% of us out there who'd just wing it

I actually like the thicker wood. It creates a pleasant gap between your line of paints allowing enough room for some decorative labels so you can 5S them rather than haphazardly looking for a specific color. :-)

I made "steps" from 2x4's. Simple cuts, weights a ton, but doesn't move around. Made 280 bottle rack for under $5 US. Does take up space on the desk but totally worth it.
