This is not a bug, reason for the second subgrid is because you can't merge a sub grid connected through one hinge because the hinge and hinge part occupy the same block. With the second hinge there is a sub grid in between which allow this to work. I have used this method on several ships, and you are right you just have to be patient and let the game do the math. Happy building

This is a great idea and workaround. I used rotors for mine and it has the same effect.

You need to group all the thrusters on the subgrid and turn them off during the transition due to the thrusters fighting against the rotation. With a simple series of timer blocks you can easily automate the whole process.

This is actually extremely simple yet ingenious - the double hinges allowing the merge blocks to actually function correctly is awesome, and I believe was probably where a lot of people (myself included) were getting stuck on trying to do this. I suspect it works the same for rotors and whatnot?

i was doing a X-wing so slighly different, but using 2 hinges and 2 merge blocks i manage to keep my thruster vector correct on the wings (it just move 15 degrees, no vetor change like u are doing there), but from your design i was able to make my own and it worked, thank you ;)

You could try synchronize hinges and merge blocks with the use of timer blocks.

It's working, but Clang is waiting in the corner... As soon as you're not a static grid, it will end up really bad

New to the game, can't we just build ships with thrusters on simple hinges?

Why not just limit the upper and lower of hinges, slap in enough breaking force to support t he weight of VTOL package and use rotor lock? Same results

I think we can push the uselessness of scriptlees VToL to another level - make a projector per axis with welders and grinders to just build/grind them on demand, instead of using rotors.

Does it also work with rotor instead of hinges?
