My experience with Red Cross during the numerous hurricanes in Florida is that they are nowhere to be found. Rumours kept going around that they were going to be a one place or another but they never showed up. We were 12 days without power and the only help that ever showed up in our area was a small Baptist church from South Carolina. They brought hot food that they cooked on site, showers and laundry trailers, and friendly caring people. The kindness of these people brought tears to so many of us who really needed help.

Won’t contribute to RedCross. They don’t distribute the funds donated, but pay their employees & CEO exorbitant salaries. I’ll give locally - and directly.

If you wan't to give money put it in the needy person's hand. Most all these non profit groups are corrupt.

When you have to evacuate an entire town, and see part of an interstate wash away, that's definitely a Level 2 event

People donated millions to the Red Cross for Haiti and the Red Cross built 6 houses and then left with the money. Don't give the Red Cross anything. Prayers for these poor people losing everything.

Definitely one of the most historical floodings anyone up in the smoky mountain areas will see in a long time. It has absolutely ruined historical towns and it is just painful walking up and down towns I have lived in and been around seeing things just gone that used to be there. Prayers to everyone.

I am from the region. Emergency alerts did go out and evacuations were made to many parts of Greene County, SE Hamblen County, and Cocke County all around the Nolichuckey because the emergency alert said the Dam was in imminent danger of failing. I was up at 2 am this morning packing my bags for my family to have to get out if it did fail. Grace be to God despite taking on twice the volume of Niagra Falls and being pummeled with debris from cars, trees, buildings and light poles the dam didnt give way. However, most of the bridges did either give way or are underwater and we have a whole section of our town still cut off from the outside world with no power, way in or way out. On top of that our water treatment plant did take on too much damage and we have been informed allmof Greene County will be without water starting sometime tomorrow when the reservoire tanks will be out. They are estimating at least a week and probably longer without water. If you want to help, we are going to be in serious need of water.

Next time you see a homeless person, don't judge. As someone on this thread commented, your whole world, can change in an instant.

Thanks for reminding us about due diligence when contributing to a disaster situation. Charity Navigator is very helpful and non-partisan.

During hurricane Katrina, the Red Cross collected tons of money and then they never could prove what happened to it

I live in the big bend Florida area and I think what's going on with this dam failure is as bad as what this area is experiencing. A horse farm in Ashville had 3 horses swept away while they were trying to get them to safety. Their farm is only accessible by air. Total nightmare. Floridians had days to get out. This flash flood was impossible for people to evacuate in time. So sad.
