Personally i wouldn't strip a sunburst. its a nice color for a relic but just so you know....blind guitarists might be cool in films, but seriously......WEAR EYE PROTECTION! poly chips like hell and you dont want a red hot sharp Poly shard in your eye... unless you play blues of course and want a good `ol bluesy name like Blind Jelly Whatthefuck

Or you just spend one summer with your guitar in Rio de Janeiro...
jimcamp2423 (18 minutes ago)
Wow, made light work of that poly stripping, you can always go Nitrocellulose with a solid paint or redo the burst.

considering this on my american special, love the sonic blue finish but hate the materials. Gonna try to get it refinished in the same colour using nitro

If you want to get down to the wood you still have to sand all that sealer off, and there's alot on these guitars. Or just paint it a solid color.
SixStringflyboy (47 minutes ago)
Nice. Thinking about taking my butterscotch blonde Squier Tele down to the wood and just doing a medium/natural stain on top of the sealer.

I'm glad I watched this because I was just about to go buy some lacquer thinner and make a gigantic mess on my bass.

Dang! That's how it's done!

I was waiting for that glass table to explode. LOL

Works well on original 50s sunbursts.

The color and clear coat layers he removed gets you down to the sealer/ filler layer, heavy with silica, etc. That layer is thicker on open grained woods like swamp ash than it is on alder or basswood. If you want to repaint in a solid color, you can sand the sealer/ filler layer and spray over that. If you want to go to bare wood, you have to keep going with the heat gun and various scraping tools. It's more tedious work.

Looks so satisfying!!
dgenerated (13 hours ago)
what temp setting did you use, or how hot does your gun get?. I have two bodies I'm trying to strip of a poly finish and are new to heat guns!..
criagflowers2357 (17 hours ago)
I tried and it worked! Heat your oven to 375 and cook that body for 40 min. Be ready with your heat gun and have fun cuz it just peels off three times as fast. Have fun boys.
ayeapprove (22 hours ago)
Oh man, this looks so thin compared to the black squier strat out of china I did like this. It took me 1h to get the colour coat off and half a day to get the grain filler off.
johng2880 (8 hours ago)
Warning, the finishes on the early '90s MIMs don't come off nearly this easily. Stripping a '94 Jazz bass atm ... oh my
frank2874 (5 hours ago)
very fast and clean work! which heat setting are you using?
danwebb4418 (2 hours ago)
