I can only imagine how much more realistic this scene could be if they remade this movie espsecially this scene using today's technology and visual effects.

Fun facts. As originally written, L.A. was supposed to be the impact site. The North Texas Film Commission was approached for location shooting. The Commission was so incensed at being asked to sub for their West Coast rival they sent a nasty refusal. So the writers in retaliation changed impact ground zero to downtown Dallas.

Argue what you will about this movie, but at least this movie tried to do something different by destroying Dallas, which doesn't get destroyed that often in disaster movies (New York and Los Angeles have been destroyed in a LOT of movies)...

And that's why you always have a basement or storm shelter... you will live while everyone else dies.
