This completely went over my head as a teenager but now I think this movie was kind of ahead for its time. The way the talent and innovation of African Americans gets stolen and used by white Americans while the rest of their lives are completely ignored. Even Isis scoffing at Torrance's attempt to assuage her own guilt is pretty incredible.

The camera angle at the beginning is everything...it’s placed at a spot where the viewer almost has to “look up” to the Clovers, as if they are some royalty to be revered. Obviously the performance in itself is amazing but that camera angle plays some tricks in there too.
