For anyone confused, the "nonsensical" answer Harry gave was the sequence of chess moves in the italian opening:

"Justify your answer."

Bowl's answer actually makes sense... The question doesn't mention who the captain is, and there's only sheep and goats on the boat. If you know exactly how many sheep and goats there are, then you must be on the boat. If you're the only person on the boat, then you must be the captain. The captain's age is, therefore, your age.

I've seen these critical thinking questions before, and have always been confused by them. How are they meant to make people think critically? Nothing in the question pertains to an answer. You can just make something up and make up any reasoning for it. I could say the Captain was 18, because he was a Shephard with his father who was originally the Captain, and they were forced to sail to a new country, but unfortunately they were not able to sell off all of their animals before leaving and thus had to take most of them with them. Over the course of the voyage, the father went mad and started attacking the animals which is why there are less goats than sheep, but the animals, in a feared frenzy, pushed him overboard where he drowned due to the kid not being awake yet. Thus the kid became captain.

Maybe the real captain's age was the friends we made along the way

I love this concept where you see each character's answer to the same question: it really shows us their distinct personality.
