Learning and understanding about our social and emotional self and developing social and emotional literacy are important for lifelong mental health and wellbeing.
Social and emotional wellbeing involves us having the necessary skills for building and maintaining positive relationships with ourselves, our families, and our communities.
Some social and emotional skills could include being able to:
- recognise and regulate emotions;
- developing a strong sense of self;
- show care and concern for others;
- make responsible decisions;
- establish positive, effective relationships;
- negotiate challenging situations effectively;
- access learning that is interesting and intrinsically rewarding
We begin learning and developing these skills in early childhood. These are also skills we can continue to learn, grow and nurture throughout life.
