I heard this Live on the radio as it took place! Me and my Mom were listening to this on our radio at home in Bayonne NJ. The speed of the music was slowing down! Very eerie! Then everything went off and stopped on the air!

This happened because the frequency of the power system dropped to 51 Hz from a nominal of 60. The record players (or maybe tape) used synchronous AC motors so they simply followed the line frequency, which directly corresponds with the speed at which generators turn on the power grid.

That's what the voltage dropping is, its slowing down. Volts is a measurement of pressure, actually, electromotive force in a wire just like water in a pipe. So interesting. In Nova Scotia we loved evening hours and the return, with the lowering of the ionosphere, of the NYC Radio stations. Lots of 1960's & 70's kids listened to WABC & WNBC. Especially in the country and in small towns.
