I work on the ball crew for an NFL team, and if a game ball goes into the stands, either by accident or by a player tossing it into the crowd, we don't ask for it back. The kicking ball is a whole different story. There are a specific number of K-balls that are numbered, but usually only ball 1 and 2 are used. The kickers want to keep using those 2 balls in rotation because they get a "broke-in feel" to them. If one of those balls goes into the stands, we usually just trade a regular game ball for the K-ball. Although it doesn't happen often, we haven't had a problem getting a K-ball back.

At Auburn games, if a ball goes into the student section, the students pass the ball up the stands to the top and drop it outside the stadium

I caught a really bad kick by Ryan Succop once at a Titans game towards the end of the 4th. Took the ball, put it in my bag, and left. Still play football with it

I studied the baseball case in law school; it is actually a super interesting and novel case at the time it was brought. there was another similar one brought that dealt with who gets the ball if one person in the stands catches it but drops it and another gets it after. I'll save you the research; it is the second person's ball following the "finder's keeper's" rule because the ball is considered "abandoned property" for purposes of the law, so whoever "finds it" (i.e. gets possession first) gets finder's rights.

It's not even douchy to bring a glove to a ball game though.

If you don't bring a glove to a baseball game you run the risk of getting nailed in the face! That doesn't make you a douche! Just have common decency to not reach over into the field.

At Steeler games you actually get signed to a contract since they have a hard time finding receivers who can actually hang on to the ball

At 2:06 I don't think that the kicker would really like a foot ball that just missed the net

Players are fined the cost of the ball for giving the ball away. They're fined the $6,000 if they throw it.

I kept a football from the Seahawks... from the 80s (ouch) that some player threw into the crowd. Security came to me and wanted the ball. I had already "handed it off" to a friend.

I was at a game where a guy caught a ball after it missed the net on an extra point. He then threw the ball to someone else in the stands. The ball then kept getting thrown around the stadium. The ball made it around the stadium about three times before a security guy eventually confiscated the ball. The guy who originally caught the ball was ejected. The security guys were boo’ed excessively. However, the football gods smiled upon our team that day for showing so much team spirit.
